The salivary amylase makes food into balls. The process of digestion starts in the mouth when the food eaten is chewed.

EXPLANATION:

  • In the mouth, the "salivary glands" secrete an enzyme called amylase that breaks down the food or long starch molecules into maltose.
  • When the food is ready to be swallowed, it is "gathered into a ball" called bolus.
  • The bolus is then sent to the pharynx from where the food goes to the oesophagus and eventually to the stomach.
